A must for women over 30

Things start to change a bit as we age and so we can change too in order to deal with each and every transition well.  I own a product that has been so great for me as I have moved from a young person to a middle aged person.  Middle aged?  Really?  Yes, I need to accept the reality.

So anyways, a dear friend got me a magnifying mirror with a light when I was in my 30s and I was like… ‘ok, but I already have a hand held mirror that I can see the back of my head with’.  So clueless was I.  So I set it up in my bathroom, turned on the little light, looked in the stronger magnification side and was like ‘wow!’  And so now it is indispensable to me.  I can see my eyebrows to pluck, skin imperfections to address, exactly where to put makeup on, food in my teeth, things stuck to my face I couldn’t even see before, eyelashes and other things in my eyes and much more… all without glasses on!  Yes, it can be a little shocking at first for sure.  Be prepared!  But wouldn’t you rather be the one to see and address each issue verses everyone else seeing and then not getting to address them?

There are many out there to choose from, but, to me this one is the best for the price.  Click on the link above and enjoy!

Want silkier hair?

Hello again friends!

Ok, I have a lot of ideas to help with frizzy hair that actually make a difference and so here is another one.  With this one, you don’t even have to lift a finger.  It actually works while you sleep!  It even has the added benefit of helping your skin as well.

Drum roll please!  It is… sleeping with a silk pillowcase!!  Please click the link and try this one from Amazon as it is one of the best.

Many, say like over 4000 people listed in the reviews, who’ve tried this product have seen a difference.  For obvious reasons, silk does not grab onto your hair while you move around in your sleep, like cotton, polyester or other fabrics do and so your hair stays more tangle free and less frizzy.

The added benefit is that it also is easier on your skin.  You will find in the short term, you don’t have those indents across your face when you wake up in the morning from the folds in your pillowcase.  And then for the long term, you won’t experience as many wrinkles in general.

Again, this is something that doesn’t cost much yet has great benefits.

One thing to remember is that you want to be a bit gentle with silk pillowcases for them to last longer.  Putting them in a zipped lingerie bag with cold water on delicate cycle and then hanging them to dry will help them last.

Blow Dryers

So, a question I get asked about at the salon is how to choose the right hair appliances or tools, such as blow dryers, flat irons etc.  There is obviously a plethora of them on the market and it can be hard to make the right choice for your hair.  There also is a wide price range.

At my salon, we don’t have the space to stock hair tools such as these and so I recommend different options.  One option so you don’t feel completely lost at Rite Aid or other big box stores is to go to a store specific for beauty products.  Some like Ulta.  I have appreciated Sallys Beauty Supply.  The reason being is that the staff often has more expertise then you’d get at a Wal Mart on these types of tools.  You can explain to them what your hair is like and what you are looking for and get some ideas from them.

At the salon, I prefer a solid blow dryer that does my job quickly and well and lasts a long time.  Other qualities that are beneficial in blow dryers are that they are lightweight, quiet, and have elements such as ceramic, tourmaline and negative ions that are supposed to be easier on the hair, as well as locking in more moisture.

One dryer I’ve appreciated a lot and owned for years was a Solis dryer.  It was not lightweight, but it was powerful and extremely well made, lasting over 20 years.  They don’t seem to be selling the exact model I had, but you can find a good one here that is pretty solid.

After it died, I purchased a T3 dryer and it died within a year which was a shock to me after having such a great long lasting dryer and also after how touted these were.  Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

So, of course I prayed about it at this point… should have done that much earlier.  And the next dryer that was presented to me I bought in faith and it has been just great.  You will see when you look on Amazon that it doesn’t have the highest reviews and yet, this is deceiving because if you read them, you find most of the negative reviews have to do with a flat iron that has nothing to do with the blow dryer.  It is called the Keratin Complex dryer  and is a little more expensive.

When speaking of hairstylists, a very popular one right now is the Dyson dryer, which sounds great, but is too pricey for me.

A lot of people have a hard time managing a brush and blow dryer at the same time to get that beautiful fresh from the salon look.  Another great product that can help you in this area and has amazing reviews on Amazon is the Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer.  I have customers that use these at home and RAVE about how they can now style their hair like I do at the salon.

Another one that has the absolute best reviews online and is a quality blow dryer is the Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium Dryer.   You will be happy with this one.

And finally a friend of mine just went to Sallys, talked with the staff there and found a dryer she is in love with, says she’ll never go back to cheaper big box store dryers as she didn’t know there was any difference.  She bought a Hot Shot Hair Dryer.  So if you prefer shopping in a store verses online, please try this.

People also ask me about where to get the best diffusers.  What is a diffuser you might ask?  It is an attachment you put on the end of your dryer to not allow as much air to come out.  Heat of course still comes through, but not as much air, so as to keep any kind of curly or wavy hair from becoming frizzy from it blowing all around while drying.  Sometimes they come with a blow dryer, but in my experience they are often big, heavy, clunky and awkward to use.  And then over time you may end up with an array of them that don’t fit onto your most recent dryer.  And so what I like is a diffuser sock which essentially fits on any dryer at any time and works well to diffuse the air.  Here is a great deal on a decent sock diffuser.

I hope I was able to narrow your search as there is really hundreds of dryers out there to choose from.

Happy hair drying, my friends!

Need help with frizzy, damaged hair?

Anyone dealing with frizzy hair or split ends?  Do you desire shinier, healthier hair?  Well, I feel like I could do a whole series on what to do to help your hair become shinier and healthier.  But, today I’m going to just stick with one tip that will make a difference, so as not to have too long a post.  I also repeat this tip quite a bit in the salon and so I thought it wise to share here as well.  It all has to to with what you do after you have washed your hair, when it is wet and needs to be dried.

You see, many people do the same thing.  They wring a bit of the water out of their hair with their hands, step out of their shower, grab that towel and begin drying off their hair by rubbing the towel all over their head and hair.  As with many things that have to do with our health and beauty, this would be fine if you did it once in a while, but if every time you dry your hair, it starts with this, it definitely could be adding to the split ends, frizz and damage of your hair.  You see, if you look closely at any regular towel, you will see that there are a ton of little strings sticking up from it.  Unbeknownst to many, these little strings are fantastic at grabbing on and roughing up each one of your tiny hair’s cuticle layers (aka- the outer layer of each hair strand, where split ends start).  We rub back and forth and go against the grain of the hair as well, like a stylist does when they want to back comb or tease your hair for volume and yet, this causes knots and can also cause damage.

And so ideally, when you finish washing/conditioning your hair, you want to wring it out with your hands.  But after that, either let it be so it dries a bit (which is great for people with short thin hair as it will not drip all over the place) then, starting at the ends, gently comb it out.  But, if you have any length or amount of hair, it would be much better to use something much easier on your hair.  Because I am a frugal person myself, to benefit you, I suggest using an old t-shirt to dry your hair over using a towel.  It is self evident right off the bat that if you look closely at a t-shirt, it does not have those nubby little strings coming off of it that can tangle and over time, damage your hair.  I also suggest never going against the grain of the hair when drying it, so as to rough up that cuticle layer, but rather dry your hair with that t-shirt starting at the top of your head and going down, squeezing it, to get the access water out.

But, if you do not want to bother with a t-shirt hanging out to dry in your bathroom all the time and would prefer an excellent product at an affordable price that is far superior to a towel, then I would recommend the Aquis Original Towel Wrap for many reasons.  One, it will dry your hair much faster then any towel for two reasons- it is made of a special microfiber that absorbs water better and also it securely stays on your head while drying your hair.  Another benefit of it being on your head for a given time is that it keeps your hair off of your face, body and clothes while you are getting ready for your day.  This is beneficial if you are eating your breakfast, brushing your teeth, shaving, applying moisturizer, sunblock or makeup, or putting on clothes that you don’t want to get wet.  The microfiber is lightweight and much gentler on your hair then a towel is as well.  Of course it will not dry your hair completely like a blow dryer will and this brings me to my last point.  We all know that all heat tools, including blow dryers, can also be hard on your hair.  Yet, we know that blow dryers are very handy as many do not want to leave their house with wet hair and they are amazing at producing the fullness and style we want as well.  So, as a stylist I also often recommend not blow drying your hair for very long if possible, in other words- letting it dry out as much as possible before blow drying it.  And so, of course this Aquis product allows for much drying before the dreaded heat tool needs to do it’s work.  This product also comes in 8 colors to choose from and is on Amazon prime so that, if you belong, you won’t have to pay for your shipping.  This towel is easy to launder and dries quickly as well.

Hope this helps you on your road to healthier, softer and silkier hair.

Help for Your Scalp

Hello my friends!

I’m so excited to share lots of natural beauty tips and tricks to save you time and money on your road to health and beauty.

At our salon, our mission is to provide a ‘healthier alternative for beauty’, meaning products, services and advice to help you to conduct your personal care regimen in a healthy way. We look for products that are as green and clean as possible, as effective as possible and as low cost as possible. And since we cannot carry all the wonderful products there are out there in our brick and mortar, I thought I would write about them and show you where you can get them.

One thing I’ve come across through 25 years in the beauty industry is lots of skin, particularly scalp skin as I’m a hairstylist and have been up close and personal with thousands of heads- standing over top of these heads, washing them and then going meticulously through them with a fine tooth comb to section off hair for cutting, rolling and coloring. A hairstylist gets to see things that you yourself may never see on your own head. My associates and I have been able to alert clients to unusual looking things that turned out to be lice, eggs, ticks, dandruff, fungus, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, acne, moles, psoriasis, cysts and even cancer. Now obviously, as a stylist, I am able to recognize but not treat many of these conditions. When it is above my skill level, I advise my client to go to the dermatologist and this is where they get a thorough diagnosis and treatment. But, there are a few things in this list I can help with. I find myself sharing the same information with many customers, so I thought I would write it here for you all to read.

OK, as I’ve done research and tried different solutions, I’ll share some products I’ve used and found effective that are on Amazon (with whom I’m affiliated) for great prices.

One, for lice, there is Ladibugs One and Done Lice Treatment Kit.

Two, if you know you’re child’s friends are having a lice outbreak and you just want to prevent your child from getting it, use Rosemary Lice Preventative shampoo.

Three, for those with some forms of dandruff, fungus and even sometimes dermatitis, psoriasis or eczema, Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar has helped many and you can get a gallon at a great price on Amazon.  I realize a gallon is a lot to buy at once, but once you realize all it’s benefits, you may be happy to get a lot for such a great deal and refill your smaller bottle you may already have.  For the scalp, I recommend mixing it with water 1:1 in a spray bottle and applying it all over your dry scalp for ½ hour letting it sit before washing your hair and/or apply it as a conditioner after washing your hair, full strength or half, and leave on for a few minutes.

And lastly, my favorite for it’s effectiveness with any and all dandruff conditions and even is paraben and aluminum free, is Head and Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner in One.   Be sure to apply at the beginning of your shower and leave on while you soap up the rest of your body so that it can stay on for a bit and then rinse at the end of your shower.

Hoping for you and yours to have a healthy scalp!

beauty

As a lover of God and a salon owner, I’m faced with the topic of beauty, and all it’s implications, quite often. I truly believe it is God who has blessed and sustained me in this industry for many years and uses it for His glory in wonderful ways. And yet, at times, though I enjoy what I do, I am also a very practical person. So at times I think to myself about how beauty is really a non necessity. Especially as we as a salon get more and more education on exactly how to create more beauty through many fun techniques in working with hair, makeup and skin care,… it’s like we are getting deeper into aspects of how to create beauty. Since I have chosen the more natural approach at the salon, providing less toxic, healthier products and services, I realize that beauty is often intertwined greatly with the health of the hair and skin. Health is a priority in my life and so this feels right, but at times I still struggle with the aspect of beauty and how it seems a non necessity if you really get down to it… do we need it? But then, some thoughts, and in particular, a question came to mind. What if God, while He was creating the earth, thought the thought I had, that beauty is a non necessity? What if He thought that everything should only be for practicality? With this, my entire perspective began to change. Let’s take food alone. What if He thought that food was simply only for sustaining life and health and that people should methodically take it in several times daily to ensure these things. He could have chosen to make all food orange let’s say and all water blue, or no color at all. And yet, He decided to use beauty in making food of all types of colors, shapes, sizes and textures for us to enjoy. I mean just think about the massive amount of different kinds of food from berries to peppers to kale to oranges to potatoes and on and on. Take anything He created and you’ll see that He very decidedly chose beauty as well as variety. Take flowers, trees, animals, even people and you’ll see that yes, He could have decided to make everything practical, just all in browns say with the same shape and said to us to just eat, drink and move around for health and sustaining of life, but instead He decided to throw color, texture, size and shape into everything created. We are made in His image and so of course we will enjoy creating beauty as well through many means such as music, drawing, dance and yes, even hair, skin and style. And so I will continue to use this mind and these hands to create beauty in more and more ways, using the potential in me, and in this I will follow His lead, with His help, and get to experience a portion of the joy He experiences in creating beauty for our pleasure.

P.S. I often feel most safe trying new things on myself first, so don’t be worried if I look a little different, just be happy I’m working the quirks out on me instead of you.

Love from a stylist

beginnings of my journey

Some years back in my career, while I was only concerned with using whatever products I felt performed well, I ran into a problem.  Several clients scalps were mildly to intensively reacting to the color line I was using.  For a while, I adjusted the formulas by watering them down and that a helped a bit, but eventually, with some of these clients, things progressed in a bad way.  I hate to admit that one even went into anaphylactic shock which then actually led her to the ER.  This particular client also expressed that she did not want to stop coloring her hair and pleaded with me, asking if there was anything I could do.  Another client, who was having a reaction not so severe but still, a reaction, brought me a photocopy of a study about a particular ingredient in most all hair color lines that was quite toxic.  So, this, amongst a few other things, got the ball rolling for me to begin really spending time researching ingredients in hair color, and then eventually all personal care products (ie. shampoo, hair gel, makeup, toothpaste, etc) to see what affect they have on the human body.

I’ve learned a lot.  I don’t think the things we do randomly or in moderation are things of high concern, but rather the things we do often and repeatedly… these have an affect, whether good or bad.  And so it is with all the personal care products that most of us use daily on our bodies.  Think about it.  From the time you wake up until you leave the house, what do you do?  You take a shower and use soap, shampoo, conditioner and shaving cream.  Then you get out and possibly use moisturizer, after shave, antiperspirant, toothpaste, hair products, perfume, sunscreen, makeup and more.  By the time you leave the house, if you add up the ingredients in all of those bottles, you’ll see that you easily have interacted with over 100 ingredients.  If half of these are toxic, meaning they contain things like carcinogens, hormone disruptors or allergens, this may explain some of your health problems as life goes on.

And so yes, there are other things that affect our health like how we eat, sleep and exercise.  There are also other products we use around our home, like cleaning products, that could be affecting us.  But, my industry revolves around personal care and so my salon as well as the info I share on this blog and on social media are just ways for me to do my part in helping people with their health via being educated about the many personal care products on the market today.  I feel that this will not only bless and help my many beloved customers, but also will help myself and others who work in the industry who would like to enjoy a long healthy career without the negative affects of toxins in hair and skin care products that we are around so constantly.

I will write more later about what some of these toxic ingredients are and how we have prayed and worked hard to find products to use and sell in our salon that do not contain them.

I also have to mention how happy I am to say that both the aforementioned ladies still come to get their hair colored with me and, with the new cleaner color line I am using, have absolutely no irritation or reaction.  So grateful for this!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read.  May you be blessed with a long and healthy life!

a great resource

One of my favorite resources among many things I read on blogs etc. is the Environmental Working Group online.  They have many products listed on their website and show the toxicity of each by breaking down each of their ingredients and explaining what is good or not good about them.  The portion of their website that I have often used is called skindeep (ewg skindeep) to learn more about personal care products specifically like shampoos, styling products, sunblock, hair color, skincare and makeup.  It helped me greatly in choosing what lines to carry at the salon as well as what to use in my home.  Check it out!  It will help you make clean, safe and healthy choices concerning your personal care products as well as much more.
